The Rise of the "Smish"
It starts with a buzz in your pocket. An urgent text message claims you have an unpaid road toll and that your vehicle will be impounded if you don't pay immediately. This is a classic example of phishing (specifically "smishing" or SMS-phishing).
Federal investigators have uncovered that these messages often originate from organized crime groups in China. These groups have duped millions of victims, generating over $1 billion in illicit revenue.
The scam is sophisticated. Victims are led to a fake website designed to look legitimate. Once there, they input their credit card details. However, the criminals don't just want the card number; they want to add the card to a digital wallet (like Apple Pay). To do this, they need the victim to provide the authorization code sent by the bank. Once authenticated, the criminals can use the card instantly on the other side of the world.
