The Night of Fire and Fireworks
Every year on November 5th, people in Britain remember a very old story. This night is called Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night. People celebrate because a dangerous plan did not work. In the year 1605, a man named Guy Fawkes and his friends were angry with the government and the King, King James I. They wanted to start a new, different government. So, they made a secret plan: to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Guy Fawkes was the one who was chosen to hide 36 barrels of gunpowder (a type of bomb) in a cellar under the Parliament building. This was a very dangerous act, and people called him a traitor for it. He had betrayed the king. Luckily, the government heard about the plan. On November 4th, Guy Fawkes was caught next to the barrels. The King and the Parliament were safe. Guy Fawkes was punished. Today, Bonfire Night is a fun party. Families go to see fireworks and bonfires (big outdoor fires). They burn a doll (an effigy) of Guy Fawkes on the fire. They eat sweet food like toffee apples. It is now a fun tradition for families, and the king and government are safe!1 / 5: Main Purpose
